For the first 18 months after the Cudlee Creek bushfire, because nearly all our stock was destroyed in the fire, we had no wine of our own.

Two local wineries came to the rescue, one donated wine, the other sold it to us at cost. We called this wine ”hope!” because that is what it gave us.

In July 2021 our next step on our road to recovery has been the release of four wines in which we have had a hand in making.

Fumé Blanc Special 2016

Apple and pear nose, followed by creamy textured pineapple, grapefruit and vanilla flavours, balanced by crisp citrus acidity. This wine is a luscious version of the great white wines of Bordeaux, from the Graves region!

Quite a lot of wineries these days are experimenting with alternative varieties, from Spain, Italy and Austria. We have decided to do something different! We have used a variety already planted at our vineyard and made it in a different way to the way that 99% of Sauvignon Blanc producers do. The name originates from two nouns : Pouilly Fumé (which is one of two classic French Sauvignon Blanc areas that NZ and Aussie are stylistically copying) and Sauvignon Blanc. Therefore Fumé Blanc. The name came about when a famous Napa Valley winemaker, called Robert Mondavi, was trying to come up with a brand name to describe a new style of Sauv Blanc that was barrel fermented.

Handpicked from “Keith’s” block, on our estate, from the warmest part of the bowl shaped Sauv Blanc block.. Keith has been a long time family friend and mentor who trained the young vines in this block. The grapes were destemmed / crushed and then pressed. A very slow and long “natural” fermentation in barrel was followed by 11 months on the yeast lees, like the dry white wines of Bordeaux. However, we used a 10 year old barrel to minimize the oak influence.
